Service Learning Reflection 1
I am extremely excited to do this service learning work at the boys and girls club. When I first heard that we had to do fifteen hours of service learning I was not really looking forward to it. I have a very busy schedule and I knew that it would be hard for me to work this into my schedule. After going to the orientation I was actually looking forward to this experience. I decided that I was going to teach English to the parents for my service learning project. My first day of volunteering was Monday, February 22. I was assigned to the more advanced group, as I do not speak Spanish very well. These people know a little bit of English already, but are not very proficient with it. I went into this volunteering experience a little bit nervous that I was going to make mistakes and that the people may not want to learn from me. I was pleasantly surprised at how warm and inviting everyone there was. Everyone there was very open and eager to learn from me. I have not learned names yet, as I was just trying to figure out what I needed to do on my first day. I am really looking forward to getting to know the people that I am teaching better. I hope to learn more about what their lives are like and more about their culture. I also hope that I can teach them how to speak English more fluently so that they can have a better life.
